Prague planning

Mom was in town this past weekend to plan her big 60th birthday trip to Europe. This is the trip that was supposed to be the whole family going to Italy in mid-April. Very soon it became just the two of us going to Warsaw. Then Warsaw and Prague. Then, thanks to the interminably long session, it turned into September. Then Dublin. Then Tuscany. ( Read more... )

If I may offer my two cents: Unless one knows someone local, I found more than 3 days in any European city (with the possible exception of Paris and London) can be *too* much. I spent 5 days in Venice once and was fed up by the time I left. Kinda the same with Amsterdam.
My point is to maybe find a day or overnight trip via car or train out of the way to kind of break it up.
That being said, I've never been to Prague, so I maybe talking out of my ass...

I think it depends on the city. Back in college, a large group of us spent about three weeks there. It was broken up with a couple of day trips (Edinburgh and Cardiff), but I never got bored. I was sick of Beijing after a week, though.

We were thinking of heading to Vienna for a couple of days, but the train ticket is too expensive.

Well it's not dead center but it's within a block or two of a tram stop and it's near the Hradcanska castle and the old town and the Charles Bridge to the North. To the south is Andel which is a big shopping mall. A nice neighborhood too though I think you may have to deal with a slight hill to get to it.

Believe it or not, it's close to a great deli/restaurant called Bohemia Bagel. Also a bar I love called Ujezd, and a theatre that sometimes performs with English supertitles called Svandovo Divadlo.

Two websites to look at are www.Prague.tv and www.expats.cz. Both are english language sites and sort of show the things going on around town and a lot of the expat info. If you're there for a week you may also want to look into taking a day trip to Cesky Krumlov which is gorgeous.

When are you at Twains next? I can come by and show you some stuff on the maps and such.

My mother would looove a good bagel, especially in Europe. Cesky Krumlov looks interesting. We're also looking at Terezin (Theresienstadt), but it might be too depressing.

I'm at Twain's every Monday night. I get there around 7:00 to eat. I start working at around 7:45 until about 10:15. It would be great if you could point me in the right direction.
