Title: Stakeout
Author: Tara Keezer
Fandom: due South
Pairing: Ray/Ray
Rating: PG-13
Notes: Been thinking about first kisses lately (thankyouverymuch, due South fen), and then I thought about my little Rays of snarkshine. Around 470 words.

Ray glanced sideways, took in Vecchio’s attitude - pissed - then looked out the front window again. Nights like this, the two of them waiting for someone to get stupid (because crooks always got stupid), Ray thought about rattling Vecchio’s cage a little, maybe shaking loose some of that anger and turning it into something else.

He risked another look, longer this time, since Vecchio was looking out the driver’s window and not paying much attention. It was just as well. Ray couldn’t stop staring at Vecchio’s neck, wondering just how rough that skin would feel if Ray ever had the balls to lick it, wondering what Vecchio tasted like.

Fuck. Vecchio wasn’t looking out the window, he was looking at the window, and Jesus. Why hadn’t Ray noticed his own reflection before now? His face was a pale smear on the glass, and he couldn’t make out much, but he could damn well see his want, and if he could see it, Vecchio sure as hell could.

Fuck!

Vecchio turned toward Ray. “You know what I hate?”

“Vecchio -”

“I fucking hate sitting out here all goddamn night -”

“Look -”

“Every goddamn night -”

“It’s -”

“Waiting for you to get off your goddamn ass and make a move already.”

“I - Huh?”

Vecchio reached across the front seat and grabbed Ray by the collar and dragged him closer. Ray’s heart, which had stuttered into a salsa beat, changed to a tango at that first, unexpectedly soft kiss. Both of them paused, their lips barely touching, hardly moving, and suddenly, it was too hard for Ray to keep still. He put his hand on Vecchio’s cheek, tilted him a little to the right, and everything clicked into place.

Kissing Vecchio was like finding his way home again, and Ray settled in, comfortable for the first time in forever as they got to know each other in this new way. Better still, Vecchio kissed like they had all the time in the world, and Ray was more than willing to go along with that. It was good, it was solid. It was abso-fucking-lutely perfect.

Ray didn’t know how long those first kisses lasted; with something that good, a guy didn’t keep an eye on the clock. He just held on for the ride and hoped it didn’t end too soon. A car backfired a couple of blocks away, and Ray finally pulled away from Vecchio, breathless and hard and wishing they were somewhere else.

He said, “I’m a little slow sometimes.”

“No shit, Stanley.” Vecchio pulled him in for one more kiss then shoved him back against the passenger door with a firm, “Stay.”

“The fuck?”

“Stakeout, remember?”

Ray blinked. “Oh. Yeah.” He looked at his watch and relaxed a little. “Besbriss should be here soon.”

Vecchio glanced sideways and muttered, “Not soon enough.”
