I was wondering this myself. Since his only stress is crossing timelines - although he does seem genuinely panicked about that.
But, (aside from the suspension of wicked disbelief) Jack knew what was going on in 2008 Cardiff, knew about Grey....if anything, Jack can focus and have a meltdown later.
So maybe (suspending, suspending), the ability to not panic and be sane was all about Jack's focus and the meltdown comes after the episode itself.
The clothes? Well - ok. How many times has Jack died in those clothes and they've been ok? Maybe they are super sekret special regenerating clothes. Maybe that's why a coat that was in style during WWII has no holes or anything in 2008.
This is really reasonable, maybe even what the creators had in mind, but I'm not comfortable with it, telling you the truth. This would mean that he only delayed the incoming madness, and in the future he'll become more broken, or even a different man. And I want the (more or less) same Captain Jack back, dammit! >_< (oh, yes, my mature motivations...)
The Eternal Coat... Maybe Jack snogs it in daily basis XD
Broken people can be fixed. Odd that for someone who is eternal and will stand to lose everything he loves, he loves. His team gives him the will to cope - see the end of Doctor Who's third series.
I think it's his capacity to love that will keep him from going mad - love for Grey, love for his team, love for Ianto. I mean, really, the first words out of his mouth after being buried and frozen for a thousand years are "I forgive you."
No spare coat? Are you kidding? He's probably got a full walk-in closet of those things. Must have bought a lot of them at some point. That's the only explanation for it not getting ratty, what with everything that's happened to it.
