Karis wandered into the Casino. It was late at night, and as usual she wasn't sleeping. She could sleep if she wanted to, really, but she wasn't really big on it. It just seemed pointless when she didn't even feel tired and she could just as easily stay up ( Read more... )

Kage was normally asleep at this hour as well, but--no. Not after the Captain had called for twenty-five and he and the other crew had had to haul ass to obey in time. Then came the purification process...

Kage was jittery. He always was after the process and he'd left Even passed out in the grips of codeine and tequila to roam the ship with a shadow over his gaze and the echoes of screams in his head.

Finally he'd settled on doing paperwork. Taking a tab of codeine had made the tension bleed away to a background hum. Life was bearable.

He looked up when the zombie entered the bar and grunted, lifting his hand and nodding in acknowledgement.

Karis glanced over at Kage and nodded in reply as she set a bottle of whiskey on the bar, followed by a tumbler. She slid back over and perched herself on a stool. That was... Kage. Yeah. The guy she'd gone into Carnival with. The guy she'd accidentally hit. Meh.

She poured herself some whiskey, then glanced over at Kage again, "You're up late."

"Couldn't sleep," he said and looked up at her. He ashed the cigarette in his hand and took a drag, flipping over a sheet of paper to start work on the next one. "What's your excuse, girlie?"

His voice was rough, but his manner and tone were easy. The casino was darker and quieter at night and it just felt more private, a bit like the ship when there were no passengers aboard.

You could almost hear the waves lapping against the hull.

The undead took a long drink and then refilled her glass. She lifted it, swirling the contents for a few moments before answering, "I don't sleep. Don't need to, anyway." She took another sip and then set the glass down.

True enough, all of it. This was what she did for solo entertainment nowadays, anyway. Drink or read or find something to do besides stare at a wall and wait for the ship to roll on.
