The last few days on the boat had been ... unbelievably weird. Strangely enough when he reverted back a few years, Jak didn't remember any of his later experiences; Haven, Spargus, the Elegante were all unknown concepts. And yet now that he was back to his normal age, he remembered the entire thing, every moment of the strange switch. It was embarrassing, but more than anything it was depressing.
He remembered being so happy-go-lucky and carefree, such an obnoxiously nice kid with a passion for getting into trouble and going on adventures. But that all changed the moment he set foot in Haven City. Sure, he might have saved the world once or twice, but at the sacrifice of his own happiness and sanity
( ... )
Bass snagged one of the empty glasses littering the bar and turned it, listening to the scraping sound it made on the counter before tossing it over his shoulder just to hear it shatter. He loved the way glass sounded when it broke. Almost like music.
"So that whole...'I'm not done with you yet' thing, that was for when you were in the mood. You know, when you said that I figured you'd be after me within a matter of days. Not like I've been hiding out. But it looks like you're too busy drinking yourself into a stupor to do anything meaningful like avenge your dad or something like that."
He felt like he'd lost so much over the last week. Things he thought he'd never experience again were dangled in front of him, then cruelly ripped away.
He'd never despised life on this boat as much as he did right at that moment.
Hand tightening around his beer bottle, Jak glared hatefully at Bass.
Bass smiled, not even bothering to hide the gesture, and turned on the stool to face Jak. With his feet propped up on a rung and his elbows on his knees, chin in his hands, he probably looked like a kid way too young for the bar scene.
"What's wrong? Did I say something untrue?" He knew he hadn't, and all he had to do was push Jak far enough to even just throw the bottle. Apparently that counted as an act of violence considering he'd been punished for the same thing, and he'd have free reign to fight back. "If you're not going to do anything about it, maybe I'll go find my fun somewhere else. You live in eighty-three seventy-seven, right? With that rat you always keep around? I bet if I knock and fake your voice he'll open up the door without even checking."
