It wasn't a good idea, Veld reminded himself, to deal with Valentine right now. In fact, it was close the the stupidest idea he'd had in quite some time. But Veld was forced to recall Reno's condition. Valentine being emotionally stable was pretty much required for the ship's and more importantly to Veld - Reno and Tseng's- safety.

Right now, Veld knew the man would be anything but. He lifted a hand and knocked on the door. "Vince?"

Vincent jerked, eyes widening slightly at the knocking--he heard the footsteps, heard Veld stop at the door, but somehow just hadn't registered that this would result in noise--and whirled to face the source.

That was Veld's voice. Asking after him. The only person on this ship allowed to call him "Vince."

He was quiet for another long moment, so long he almost thought Veld would leave, before grinding out, voice an echoing mess of layered tones, "It's unlocked."

It was an odd thing to think about when the dangerous voice informed him to come in. Regardless of his sound it was Vincent on the other side of the door.

He opened the door and saw what he expected. A nervous and rather jagged looking Vincent Valentine. Veld knew that he was supposed to be afraid, that the man on the bed was dangerous. He couldn't be afraid of Valentine though. To be perfectly frank, Veld felt nothing but sorry for the other man.

"I noticed on the network." Veld crossed the room and found a chair to sit on. "I wanted to check on you." He was unsure how Vincent would take that comment. Veld would just wait and find out.

Turning to look at him, Vincent's eyes flashed to yellow and stayed that way, pupils tightened to gold pinpricks. He blinked at Veld once, twice, then shook his head and turned away. He took a shaky breath and looked down at his communicator again, Lucrecia's transmission stopped in the middle, just where he could see her face the clearest ( ... )
