I agree; there are a ton of similarities between the current movement and the "hippie/back-to-earth" movement in the 1960s and 70s! I think it is because as a generation (both the X-ers and the older part of our generation), we grew up with an exposure to the last of the movement. I remember even as late as the mid 1990s finding a plethora of books in the public library from the 1970s on making all manner of interesting things, old-fashioned techniques (weaving, rug making, etc.), that just fascinated me to no end. Now I tend to search for those books at library sales and thrift shops--they still inspire me with their diy ethic!
