so we've been giving the dogs some more freedom as of late. our ultimate goal is that we'd like to not have them in their crates all day, instead allowing them limited roaming access in the house

I was soooo nervous when I started leaving Sophie out for the day while I was at work, and the feeling lasted for several weeks even though she'd never done anything "wrong" while I was away. Turns out she just sleeps on the couch all day so I worried for nothing. I'm ok now about leaving her out for extended periods of time, but I think having two dogs makes it exponentially more scary, because when they team up they can get into a lot more trouble! I'm sure your li'l pups will be fine though. :) Did you confine them to a specific area of the house?
we close the basement door and all the first level doors, and close the baby gate at the top of the stairs that the previous owners had left there. gives them full first floor only, and we try to put away all shoes and other items that are floor level :P
