Ϟ it can't protect; it only destroys

"It really is a miracle."Until she'd been branded, Cocoon was all that Lightning ever knew. The sight of it perched in the sky on a spire of pure crystal was enough to captivate even those difficult to impress. But that in itself wasn't what she'd been referring to ( Read more... )

It had only lasted a few moments, but it had been enough for him to know that everything had changed. His focus -their focus- had been fulfilled, yet the unexpected had happened, turning them into crystal and back to their original form in an instant, a miracle he couldn't quite believe; but it was there -or rather, it was not- the brand on his arm, the mark that had literally become a part of him, was gone for good ( ... )

She'd heard him, when he'd shouted after her. Or at least a part of her had. But she wasn't there anymore. Wasn't even on the same plane, or maybe she was but just barely. She didn't register the heat of the sun anymore, nor the rough terrain underfoot. It was like she'd been suited in armor, some sort of invisible pliable armor that might've numbed her to the world but not to the grief, the loss, the-

'Lightning.' She made no response. Then again, with Lightning, silence was often a response in itself.

He was far enough away that so long as he kept that distance, she wouldn't have to figure out how to get him to leave her alone. He was the last person she wanted to see right now. Serah. She wanted to see Serah. Needed. It wasn't a question, or a matter of can or can't. It was one of those things she just... had to do ( ... )

He hadn't really expected her to answer him, but her lack of response still tormented him. He never knew how she'd react, and while he could cope with anything she'd usually throw at him, this time, it really mattered. This time, he couldn't be on his own. The grand hero needed a hand, and it was harder for him to admit than anything he'd ever come to peace with. He needed to be told that it would be okay, because everything showed him otherwise, and he didn't know what to cling to anymore. Hope? Hope had kept him strong and alive, but it hadn't bring Serah back. Hadn't then, wouldn't now.

What was there to believe in when hope wasn't even an option?

"Lightning!" he said again, louder this time, slowly closing the distance between them.

He didn't know what to tell her. He didn't know what he wanted her to tell him, exactly. But something, anything, just a word to break the silence... He gave a sigh as he frowned, trying to cool down the tempest inside him; he didn't remember the last time he had had such difficulty to just think. ( ... )

'Lightning!'

The closer he came, the tenser she got, if such a thing were even possible. If there were any one time ever that she wished that he would just leave her alone, this was it by far.

'You just gonna stay there?'

If he were in any state to pay attention, he'd have noticed a shudder pass through her then. Just his presence was too much, let alone his demands. The fact that he was here, the fact that he existed was just one big slap-in-the-face reminder of what she'd lost. Who she'd failed.

'We're just gonna leave her?!'

But also a crystal-clear reminder of exactly who she'd come to trust to bring her sister home.

In a flash, she was on her feet and had whirled to face him. She looked half ready to scream at him, more than half ready to punch him square in the face. But no words would come. For the first time, Lightning Farron could find no words to chew Snow out. The one time she'd wanted to more than he could possibly comprehend, she lacked the coherency for proper raging. So after a minute of tension, she shook ( ... )

Do it, he thought to himself. Punch me.

She was facing him, full of rage, full of hatred perhaps, and he glared right back at her, waiting for her to make a move. If her fist was her response, then so be it! She had nailed him down before, multiple times, and he had gotten used to it; the fierce Lightning, the unexpected fury, that was how he knew her. That was what was normal to him, what should have happened.

But nothing came. No words. No punch. Just her walking away... again. And it made everything worse, so much worse, increasing his own rage and killing the last bit of faith he was desperately clinging to.

He wouldn't take it. He couldn't. And so he ran after her, and when he reached her, he took hold of her shoulders and swiftly spun her around ( ... )
