Someone pointed out that McCoy starting out harsh and then getting all maudlin was kind of like the general's scene at the end of White Christmas. And they were right! I didn't think about it when writing, but it is one of those cultural things that have invaded the collective unconscious, and then Bam! Infects fanfic.
