Every time they announce a remake of The Prisoner, I panic. Every time it falls apart, I relax.

The only one that didn't make me fully panic was the one that Mel was talking about, right after having worked with McGoohan in Braveheart, and that still made me nervous.

You summed up my feelings exactly. I did have hope for Mel's potential version, considering the fact he probably would consult with McGoohan (and was a fan of the original), but still... I bet Eccleston could've made an interesting Number Six given the right script and production, but it was the writers/directors/producers that I was most worried about. I feel like we dodged a bullet.

My dream is that I'll be reading that quote again sometime soon in relation to the ill-advised Life on Mars remake... :::shudder:::

I'm afraid I only know The Prisoner by reputation, never having gotten around to seeing it. Were there reports indicating that it would be totally screwed up? Remakes aren't always bad. Look at Doctor Who (though it could be argued it's more of a continuation) and Battlestar Galactica. But then there is stuff like Night Stalker, whose primary purpose was to make us all glad that Stuart Townsend took a pass on being Aragorn in Lord of the Rings (the guy is seriously bland, especially compared to Darren McGavin). Of course there was a proper Night Stalker remake of sorts that came out at the same time. It's called Supernatural (with Season Two out on DVD in two weeks).

It is, I think, the best series ever made for television. It's certainly one of the most original and visionary.

Unfortunately, yes. I'd actually allowed myself to get excited about a couple of earlier attempts that ended up stillborn - I agree, remakes aren't necessarily a bad thing - but this particular venture seemed to be the product of a committee, and every few months there were reports to the tune of "of course, even though we're calling it The Prisoner, we won't be keeping X," until I wasn't sure what was left of the original premise. Also, the original producer/writer/director/star Patrick McGoohan wasn't involved, even as an advisor. He's not rigid: he's proved to be rather flexible in how he's allowed artists and writers to elaborate on the series since its original airing. So the fact they weren't even consulting him, when it was his baby, sent up a red flag, above and beyond the ever more troubling ( ... )
