Mary had been waiting for those words all day.

It wasn't that she wanted to have this talk. She had avoided it for years for a lot of reasons, most of them purely selfish. But there was something nagging at her, even now when she knew there was no way around it. John was too good for this. He deserved better than this. And he wouldn't look at the world the same way after she told him about how she had been raised. Once he knew what was out there, it would always be different for him. She didn't want him to have to look over his shoulder all of the time the way she did ( ... )

That, at least, John had no trouble with. He'd never known Mary not to do what she absolutely thought was best for everyone involved, even if it didn't necessarily mean asking their opinion on the matter. Sometimes, John even agreed with her.

But this was a bit bigger than those times. And he really wished that she'd stop looking at him like whatever this was would end their marriage after they were through.

"Yeah, alright."

It couldn't be that bad. It just couldn't.

"Just talk to me, Mary. It'll be okay." He was less and less sure of whether or not that was true the more he looked at her. But at least he meant it right now.

Mary could have argued with that, but she didn't want to.

As unlikely as she knew it was, she wanted to believe that there was still a chance that they would be okay. He needed to know why she had kept things from, and then maybe - but maybe not, and she had been preparing herself for that. She wasn't foolish enough to assume that he would be alright with this. He would be hurt at first, maybe angry later. It was impossible to say what would come after that.

"Sit down." She waited for him to join her before she even thought about continuing, and then when she tried, she didn't know where to start. "I haven't been honest with you." But she was trying to be now, and that was something, right? "There's a lot that I haven't told you about my family. About my parents, and...and the way my brother and I were raised."

John took a seat next to Mary, and listened. He curbed the upshot of frustration, the wish she would just get to it already was cut down as well. She was talking, that was the important part. She'd get to it. All he had to do was to keep a grip on his temper for a little while longer ( ... )
