Returning to his room was at least a chance to get a break. Yes, it was still awkward and not his home, and true, he was jumpy enough that he'd taken a page out of Ziva's book and started sleeping with a gun under his pillow, but it was at least... Safe. It was his place in this weird city and he could keep his space exactly as he liked it ( ... )

He couldn't say he'd ever had a little girl (or any female, for that matter) look so relieved to see him and so he couldn't help but give a slightly confused, "Uhhh..." as he looked around to see if maybe she was talking to someone else who was standing behind her. He wasn't wearing his badge, no uniform; there was no way she could know he was a cop so the association of being a rescuer was rather... odd.
"Uh, listen, kid? I don't - I mean, I'm not - I don't -" He stammered and sputtered, trying to find a way to tell her he was no better off than she was without making her cry more. So he went with something safe;
"Where are your parents?"
