In which Elbie needs a sports-related icon, dammit.

I have finally organized my thoughts about the Big 12 breakup and the fate of my favorite teams (or, in some cases, my favorite rivals).

Long. And some of you don't give a flip. But rather fascinating, if I do say so myself. )

This is about as close to a sprots icon as I can, um, come- other than the Mets one;)

If this dissolution will cut down the number of BCS-honk conferences keeping us from a playoff system, I'm all for it.

Bigger conferences will mean more in-conference games and fewer bribery games against cupcake opponents (which will, unfortunately, likely raise tuition at UB a bit- they've been getting big paychecks from the Big 10, Big East and SEC for years to roll over for their teams). I liked one approach I heard someone offer: if you want your non-conference rivalry game(s), fine, but you then have to let the NCAA pick your opponent(s) for a like number.

And none of this will be truly meaningful until Touchdown Jesus is finally smitten and God picks a conference for Notre Dame. As long as that NBC money is tied up, the whole mess will always be a mess.

The Pac16 (cringe) will apparently be split into a coastal division (the original Pac-8 teams) and an inland division - you get the Arizonas. Just the thought of the Texas Longhorns anywhere near my beloved Pacific conference makes me crazy. I never liked them much but they sealed my hate, er their fate when Mack Brown cried them into the 2005 Rose Bowl over the rightful Pac-10 team, the University of California (yes, I was raised a Bear Backer!) I hear that if A&M goes elsewhere, Utah might get an invite.

I can't say I'm terribly upset with Boise leaving the WAC, might give my alma mater SJSU a better chance...assuming the new coach can right the ship. Oh, and our body bag games this year are against Wisconsin and none other than Alabama. SJSU won one game last year against a D-II school, so those won't be pretty. But the paydays will pretty much support the rest of the athletic programs.

ps, I don't hate Stanford, just won't root for them when they play SJSU or Cal. ;o)

Looks like all is well in college football. That is as well as the only major college sport with out a playoff and championship can be.

Texas said no thanks to the Pac-10...I can't say I am sad about that. Though it will only further the east coast bias against our teams...yes, in spite of my Stanford icon from the other day, I do believe that Toby Gerhart should have won the Heisman last year but the sports writers always lean east...sigh.
