hello?

So as others have been saying of late, I'd like to try using dreamwidth/livejournal more. I don't do much with it these days - I don't even use it for lists as much as I used to, though I really should try. I can't decide if this current desire is simply a mark of a slow day at work (That will be changing soon, I'm sure) or a desire to ( Read more... )

I have thoughts :) I think you're a strong writer, but anyone can work on being better, of course. I think that often you are a hasty writer, and especially a hasty poster - this is connected, more than likely, to the desire for praise and immediate gratification, but it can also lead to stories that are less polished than they could be. I don't just mean typos but also prose/diction/editing issues (but also, typos ;) Some of the benefit from YT might be not just the prompts that lead you to write things you wouldn't otherwise write, but also that it forces you to sit on your stories for a while before they go up, and you then do more editing, get more beta feedback, etc. than you otherwise would. Also, of course, you're writing for a specific person you don't know, so you are trying harder to please them than you would when you write for yourself or for a close friend (<3) who is going to love whatever you produce ( ... )

Yes, you are probably right. Okay, definitely right. About the hastiness. I'm too impatient, and I don't know how to work on that @_@ I'm sure my Changeling story this year could have used more editing to make things a little tighter, but I couldn't figure out where/how to accomplish that.

Well, that was sort of why I thought a concrit comm might be a good solution - it lets you post WIPs and get that immediate feedback (which would gratify the impulse for a response, any response - which I totally understand, btw) without it being the "finished" story, giving yourself the opportunity to continue to work on it and make changes, and hopefully guidance on what specific changes might be good <3

I want to make cool insightful comments about writing, but I am super tired and not feeling very brainy at the moment. But I've had similar thoughts about writing and often think about my friend who got her MFA in creative writing and I know she worked her ass off on many of those things (characterization, cutting unnecessary stuff, etc), so I know there are ways to practice these things. It helps when you are in a program with deadlines and professional writers who critique you, but still, maybe there are some comms out there that could let us get some practice in - cuz I need it too ( ... )
