Crunchy but criminal

All I have to say is: How in the world could you be crunchy enough to have your child at home and be vegan, but not breastfeed?

Well, humans are animals and the breast milk would therefore have been off limits.

Yet another example of why I think Veganism is crap.

Which is funny because on another forum, that theory was debunked because it's not harming the "animal". I guess you have to be that special brand of stupid vegan to starve your child.

Oh, it depends on your branch of veganism. The "harming the animal" part is just one of many interpretations of the reason for a vegan lifestyle...

The argument for not living off other species of animals is one thing. It's quite another to think that the milk our bodies make to sustain our babies is somehow bad for them.

This is so horrible and stupid.

They sound like a bunch of hippies.

What's soy milk made out of anyway?

Soybeans.

When I was living in Taiwan (and every so often afterward) I made a Chinese soymilk kind of drink popular over there which was basically soybeans, water and sugar.

Drinking beans sounds about as apetizing as tofu...

Thanks for the clarification though, I didn't know there were such things as soybeans.

So... you realize that coffee and hot chocolate are also made from beans?

To be honest, I think these people weren't vegans as much as they were neglectful, abusive parents. Strong statement, but I mean, what mother doesn't take notice when her newborn baby isn't growing but is instead losing weight, drastically?

I guess they later changed their statement in court to say that they were using soy formula which is commonly used, not vegan by any standard...

It's said that the media sort of made veganism out to be the culprit. It's an utter lack of education and complete neglect.

Seriously. I kept thinking back to our first baby, and how much we read up on everything about childcare and development during those nine months, and how we hung on every detail as we watched him get through his first year. I can't imagine not realizing that your baby was losing weight that fast and not being in the doctor's office to find out why.

Or even if they didn't notice the rapid weight gain, to find out why he was crying round the clock?

There was a lot more at work there than Veganism. Extreme stupidity and/or drug use are my guesses. Possibly one caused by the other. I mean, you can't tell there's something wrong with your baby when it's 3 pounds?!

I don't know about you but when my baby was hungry at that stage, she would cry until she got something. The point was made by the prosecutor to "think about how long they had to listen to his screams and hollers." It makes my blood boil to think of how much he must have suffered.

Just an idea, but a friend of mine who was half vegan told me once that some vegans have trouble with fertility and trouble with producing breastmilk. Not sure what happened here, but it could be the problem.. all I know is that it was totally irresponsible, and they DO make soy formula for heavens sakes!

How exactly can one be half vegan?

I have no idea. I haven't looked into what vegan really is.. thats what SHE claimed so I used her words.

Guessing... possibly vegan in diet but not in other things (refusing to wear/use anything from an animal like leather, etc.) Most, if not all, of the Vegans I know are really just diet-only but I never heard the term "half-Vegan".

If she meant she only ate some animal products (like dairy or eggs) the term for that would be "ovo-lacto-vegetarian" which is a common form of (non-vegan) vegetarianism. But I assume she meant the former.

Of course, it could mean she had one parent from Earth and the other parent from a planet in the Vega system...
