So the mormons must hate this

Aug 04, 2007 05:27

September Dawn, a movie inspired by the Mountain Meadows Massacre, in which mormons gunned down 120 men, women, and children.

Unrelated, its 5:30 in the morning on Saturday and I am at work. Weee!

I'm not so sure about the reputation-saving cloak of secrecy business, as I believe the event is relatively well recorded by now. Also, this claims to be the first act of religious terrorism in the US, but I think we have a rich history there already.

Terror is an old tactic.

I'm quite interested in the movie, because I enjoy the guilty pleasure of chuckling about mormons as much as the next person. However, I think the promo at least is making a rather ugly attempt to vilify the LDS just for the heck of it, which isn't very nice considering any true red-blooded American has a nasty history full of vicious brutality and slaughter that we don't really like to think about, not just the Mormons.

The post is more inspired by a personal frustration with having been exposed to an inordinate amount of mormon hypocracy at the moment than any illusion that the actions depicted in the movie reflect any worse on the mormons than any of a number of attrocities committed by the rest of the Americans. One could argue that the intolerance of America towards the mormons did a good job stearing the course of events that lead to the massacre, what with Missouri making it legal to murder mormons (a law overturned only a handful of years ago, incidentally, when it was brought up as a defense) and setting the stage for a persecution complex.

That said, holy chupacabre batman, the early esteemed mormon leaders were a bunch of outright wack jobs.

Unrelated, what will movie trailers be like when "Gritty narrator voice" finally retires?

If you want a genuine laugh-a-minute mormon movie, I highly recommend the PBS documentary "The Mormons". Some of my favorite parts include Holocaust survivors petitioning the church to please STOP posthumously baptising their relatives, and the family presented with the choice of almost certain death of mom if another pregnancy were undertaken... vs. "we just know there's another child in our family waiting to be born." Guess what happens.

As for Mr Movie Voice, I'm pretty sure at least 20% of men are capable of doing such a credible imitation that we'll never actually see the end of it. I think it would be fun if they switched to low-tech Text-To-Speech voiceovers starring Microsoft Sam for movie trailers. It might require more skillful writing to make something STILL INTERESTING when NOT read in THE VOICE..coming this fall, to a theater near you. (dramatic quavering noise.)
