Hah, remember when my mom visited us at the pistachio house with her friends (for her 50th and the dress up party, etc...) - she was horrified that we didn't always lock the door, she was sure we'd all be murdered in our beds.
Does she realize just how big NYC or DC is? Yes there is crime, but that city is larger than most countries... At 8 million people it is roughly equal to the 94th largest country in the world... beating out Israel, Switzerland and bulgaria...
I think she intellectually knows that, but I am her BABY and so she's imagining my 12 year old self skipping through the pre-cleaned-up Central Park at midnight. :P

I totally agree! It's a fantastic place to be :-) I spent four years at the West End for college, and it was never boring. It does however keep you on your toes, and I think that's an enriching life lesson. The one REQUIRED activity during freshling orientation (and they took attendance) was the safety lecture by the head of security. His biggest point is that there's a large population of no-gooders who relish taking advantage of the distracted, careless and gullible. So don't be. It's good advice no matter where you are, and I was glad to learn it in an environment that had so much else to share (The Met, the Cloisters, Central Park, V&T's Pizza, St John The Unfinished, The Subway, Cooper's Square, The Village, and all those fascinating characters). It's like learning to swim, or build a campfire: pay attention, lock the doors, watch the hems and dangly jewelery, DON'T PANIC, and enjoy the ride :-D
This reminds me of when Himself's aunt and uncle visited us a few years ago. They have lived all their lives in a very small community in the UP. They happened to arrive in August on National Night Out. I had forgotten about that so I called them to let them know that when they got to our neighborhood to be careful because the street was coned off and there would be kids playing there. She clearly didn't get it and gasped "Is there a riot? I just knew we'd run into riots in that big city!"
