Superb beginning, and a really intriguing place to start. I haven't seen the episode in years. It's not one of my favorites. It has always struck me as rather misogynist. In the actual episode does Spock really grasp her/Kirk's hand?

Just one note: you describe Spock's fingers as feeling cool to Kirk. Given Vulcan's higher-than-human body temperature, is that possible?

Thanks for this very kind comment! The problem for me with this episode is that TPTB intervened - no-one (as far as I can tell) was particularly happy with the way it turned out. I tend to give them marks for at least trying, but I agree with you that it's painfully misogynistic in parts. As for the hand-holding - well! He certainly grabs FOR the hand, and is holding on to SOMETHING (it's out of shot). It might be wrist, it might be hand. And the grip doesn't cease for at least 20 seconds.

On the temperature - that depends on who you ask! There's nothing in canon about Vulcan body temperature and one soft canon source has it lower than Human body temperature (around 92 degrees). That makes more sense to me, so I tend to go with that. The majority of fic (as far as I can tell) goes with higher-than-Human but there's a band of us out there who go with lower. He's always colder than Human temperature in my fics :-)

You're very good at evoking mood. I could feel Kirk's sense of helplessness/confusion/desire here. And you know how to take a single moment and wrap your mind around it and squeeze it for all it's worth! Nicely done! Faves: "...the Admiral Komack of thoughts..." ha ha ha! "...the first draft of a substandard romantic comedy..." And the cool fingers! It actually makes more sense to me that Vulcans would be cooler, since desert creatures are often cooler to prevent their body heat from, you know, killing them. I usually stick with the "hotter than Human" team because I want to fit in more, so kudos to you!

Heeheehee I'm glad you liked "the Admiral Komack of thoughts" - I amused myself greatly with that line! And YES on the Vulcan body temperature! I was lucky enough to read that reference before I ever started writing K/S fanfic and so it's been my headcanon since the word go. 92 degrees all the way!
