RAR! MS Word 2007

Oct 06, 2009 20:29

Okay, so I haven't updated Word since I got my computer, so I'm still running a previous Microsoft Word (2002). And it works fine. It does everything I want it to do. (Of course, I said that about all the previous MSWords I've used, too! And I've been using Word since I was a wee, wee Eilonwy. [Eilonwee? Um. Sorry. It's been a long evening of ( Read more... )

Oh, I had to deal with this when writers started sending me docx files -- I still use XP. Microsoft has free converters for download.

My program at the local community college actually requires me to pass a course on the care and treatment of Office 2007. Just finished the Word unit. Far's I can tell the only new feature of actual use is the insert-citations toy. (Fill in the author and title and so forth in one dialogue box, click wherever you want to put a citation and fill in the page numbers, repeat either or both until the whole bibliography's in there, and there's a button to put the entire bibliography on the last page of the document. Saves much effort.) Everything else has become hard enough to find that I'd rather stick with...whatever we're running at home. (Office 97, I think.)

Teacher of said course informs us that student discounts are available, which knocks the price from ~$300 to ~$60, but since every computer on campus has Office 2007 and nobody at home has any desire for Office 2007, I didn't ask for details. I can if you want me to, though.

Hm. Good to know. I can always use my university's library's RefWorks if I really need something to fill in the bibliographical blanks for me (and I doubt Word is running programs that use the very newest MLA style guide anyway-- just came out.)

It looks like I can get it for $60, too, but... I'm not sure I'll bother, since someone up-comment suggested a free MS converter. Woot. :)

Thanks for the info!

Most large state schools have discounts. Tom's is so-so. My brother's cost at Purdue was dirt cheap. Have you checked your school?

Hm. Good point. Looks like I can get it for $60. Which is definitely an improvement over the $300. But I'm still not sure I wanna bother springing for it just now.

you can always try using openoffice instead of word-the latest version should be able to open .docx files natively, but if not, there are plugins you can download [more info on that & other ways of opening .docx files here].

hope this helps!

Hm. Good point. And I can use the online version of Word 2007 via my university's application page. For some reason, though, the whole idea feels really weird... dunno why. But you're right-- it would sidestep the .docx problem!

i have this problem at work! except we use macs and everyone who sends us stuff seems to use a pc, which is sometimes its own special annoyance.

anyway. i was going to say that someone finally pointed out to me that microsoft.com has free converters, but kizlj beat me to it.

See, as an instructor I try to be considerate. I hate Macs (sorry), but I post everything for my students in .rtf files because I know both Macs and PCs can open them. How thoughtful I am! :D

Oh well.
