It’s interesting to compare these people to the two we saw in my original. Leigh has changed the most, of course, less prickly and more in control, taking on responsibility within the new Council where before (however much she may have thought it was justified) she was more focused on rejecting that organizations’s authority. Xander is less different as a character, but he’s clearly in a different place now, introspective and maybe just a bit melancholy. Their current interaction, while using the previous one as a foundation, is also something else now, each of them regarding the other as more or less an equal (he’s not in awe of the status or physical power of a Slayer, she’s neither resentful of ‘this guy from the Council’ nor still intrigued by the mystique of the semi-mythical Carpenter

While as usual in a story like this, it's appropriate to let the reader come up with their own interpretation for a lot of things, my basic intent was to portray Leigh's state of mind--and to have it be discernible to Xander--as "Yes, I'm still interested, but I'm not suicidal. Let me know if you and Dawn decide that it ain't happening
