Okay, I need to rant after watching this crappy movie so BE WARNED THERE WILL BE SPOILERSI'm a sucker for CG movies. I'll basically watch anything with CG if it has a remotely decent plot e.g FF7 : Advent Children (awesome CG, lovely fanservice but plot was lousy). Eventho I've never watched the anime or read the manga of Captain Harlock, I was ( Read more... )

As someone who grew up on Harlock, yeah, this def looked like fan service from the very start XD I haven't had a chance to see it at all, but I'll have to look out for all the points above, which look like a great drinking game!

Hehe, if you do, be sure to take a drink every time someone says 'Dark Matter' or points a gun at someone and then doesn't shoot.

It probably was more fanservice tho judging from what I read about it on Wikipedia, they took a lot of liberties with it. Wikpedia mentions that Harlock battled alien invaders who were oppressing mankind. This would've made more sense to me than the supposedly corrupt Gaia Government.

I agree with you that CG anime or video game movies have a problem with good story writing. My boyfriend and I joke that with these movies, the entire budget is spent on animation and none on story-writing. I think that only CG movie I've seen that had great visuals *and* a good story was Final Fantasy : Spirits Within. Its only flaw was calling itself a 'Final Fantasy' movie 'cause most fans expected something more fantasy-like (monsters, Chocobos, Moogles, etc). It still makes me sad that this movie bankrupted Squaresoft.
