I thought the finale was shit, tbh. All those problems you mentioned, plus more ranting I've been doing on Tumblr. Given the standard that the former series set, this finale was a complete fucking waste and a letdown. It's really frustrating, because the themes and conflicts are incredibly relevant to a lot of us watching it, but in the end, rather than really interrogate the conflict, the writers just boiled it down to individual flaws rather than flaws in a society's structure, which frankly is a cheap-shot way of wriggling out of a difficult problem.
I had more sympathy and feels for Tarrlok and Nolatok in their ten fucking minutes than I did for Korra in ten episodes. THIS IS A WRITING PROBLEM. Korra gets zero character growth in the entire series. Mako remains stupid and assholish towards Asami. Asami basically gets booted off the screen except to tell her father he's a terrible person. Bolin, sigh, Bolin.
I actually hope that in the next season, they'll continue addressing the 'benders vs non-benders' conflict. The huge amount of people at Amon's rallies made it very clear that his message resonated with a lot of people in Republic City. It would a real waste if they didn't explore this issue further.
I agree that Korra got very little character growth. After her first confrontation with Amon at Aang Memorial island, she was obviously scared of Amon and the scene where she finally admits as much to Tenzin was a sign of character growth IMO. I just wish that there had been more scenes like that.
