01. crowd

Krile had never seen so many people gathered in one room just to dance--she watched the elegantly stepping feet and swirling dresses of Tycoon in fascination as they waltzed around.

02. long

Even though she'd never been afraid of heights, it still seemed to take days to cross the invisible path over the infinite blue sky between the turrets of Dimension Castle.

03. healthier

Stronger bones, stronger muscles; she could march and fight the whole day just like he had, though her body was still as small and bony as ever.

04. rig

When the airship touched down in the water and its sails unfurled, she followed Faris up to the crow's nest; the pirate didn't so much as look at her, but simply rested a hand on her head.

05. shaving

When she was little she'd watched the soldiers shave each morning, but she'd been snatched away from the basin when she picked up a razor to try it herself--Grandpa had assured her that she would look better with a mustache like his.

06. window

She huffed on the glass and began drawing her wind drake, then jerked away in embarrassment when she heard footsteps behind her, but Lenna simply smiled and started doing the same.

07. hate

"I hate that Exdeath!" said the soldiers in the castle--she almost wished she could too, but that hadn't been how Grandpa had made him flee, and she would fight the same way.

08. paper

It had been a year since then, but she still spent an hour staring at the paper before she could manage to write anything beyond Dear Mid.

He had blond hair cut like a helmet around his head, the biggest, roundest spectacles she'd seen, and rest of him looked like a pile of robes with feet; that and the expression (like he knew how the universe worked and would explain it whether you were interested or not) couldn't do anything but endear him to Krile.

"Of course I was fine--you must have nodded off when the scholars were explaining how to crash a meteor properly, silly old fool."

11. bundle

Krile liked staying in the tent, all four of them huddled together wrapped around them... she didn't stir when she woke up, simply enjoying the closeness as the sun rose.

There was no expression on Faris' face as she held out her hands to Syldra's fading spirit; Krile recognized it as the look of a man who couldn't cry no matter how much he needed to.

13. morose

She was startled out of her gloom by a hand on her shoulder and a kind look from Bartz... it was hard for her not to smile with him around, but it didn't stop her from getting into those moods in the first place.

14. capable

By the time they reached the Island Shrine there was no more hesitation, no unexpected flailing as her arms moved automatically in ways she wasn't expecting; she knew how to move and what cues to look for from the others.

She was surprised to see how often Lenna went barefoot, but it didn't take long for Krile to join her in the habit; there was just something fun about feeling the grass between her toes.

16. body

One moment she was clutching him, sobbing into his ruined and bloody clothing as each attempt to heal him failed--then his body vanished and she hit the ground with a strangled cry.

17. seventeen

"How many has that been?" she groaned as she slid the coils of the dead aspis off of herself--"Seventeen," said Lenna, looking towards the traps in the next corridor, "and we're about to fight two more."

She clung to the railing, ponytail whipping around behind her and the airship's timbers shaking under her knees as Faris shouted at Bartz and Bartz snarled above the noise--the airship couldn't hold up to this, and she wondered if he was going to come apart at the seams too.

She didn't know how she knew Grandpa was in trouble, and she knew they wouldn't let her have the meteor if she asked--but she knew she had absolutely no choice but to jump in and go to the other world.

20. stump

There was nothing left outside the Guardian Tree but ash, blackened trees, and the charred bodies of monsters; she tried not to look at it as they climbed aboard the wind drake.

21. solemnly

Not even Bartz smiled as they made their way through the hellish corridors of Castle Exdeath, and that made her more anxious than anything else.

22. liar

By six she knew not to ask Grandpa any more questions about scholarly subjects--not after he'd told her that Castle Bal had been constructed by fairy orcs and abductors on the day of his coronation.

23. rain

She'd been hoping that the rain would work like a bath, but all it did was make her shiver as the dust and blood turned into something that'd be impossible to wash out.

24. fist

It was amazing how she could toss a dragon clear across a pond with just one punch--she decided she liked the Monk job quite a bit, and then Bartz said that it had been Grandpa's favorite too.

25. sleep

Of all the places they slept, the submarine was the least comfortable--no matter how she curled up on the reclining chair or arranged the blankets, she couldn't keep the metallic chill from seeping into her.

26. pretty

Krile giggled at Bartz's red face and Faris' sour one, but he did have a point--she really did look beautiful as Princess Sarisa.

27. humbly

"I'll tell you one thing, kiddo," Faris said as she flapped the giant bloodstain on her shirt, "it's nice of you not to lord the healing over us like that old bat used to."

28. spar

Bartz brushed off her repeated apologies as he got back up, not seeming too bothered by the felled sapling next to him; she decided to stick with a spear until she got used to the fact that her arms were about ten times stronger now.

29. brain

The kitty suit faded back into the crystal shard and the red mist faded, making the wolf's brains stand out against the pale stone floor--she dimly heard Faris say something approving before throwing up.

30. doubly

The second image of the sorcerer vanished as her spear passed through and she jumped back as Bartz's arrow went right through the real thing.

31. slow

She could hear the barrier hiss through the water as it expanded and whirled around when she reached the bridge's gatehouse--for once she was faster than Grandpa, and she could only watch as the clear red wall knocked him and his friends up through the stratosphere.

32. ache

She could feel the pain grow less as time went on--it was as though the hurt was spreading out amongst the four of them, with each of them shouldering part of it so none of them would have to bear all of it.

33. sand

As the others strode ahead, she knelt and scooped up a handful of sand, then squeaked and flung it away at the burning heat--at Bartz's questioning look, she admitted it was the first time she'd ever seen a desert.

34. nose

"Krile, hold still--there's something on your face!" --and she let herself fall for it again as Grandpa chortled and grabbed her nose.

35. drifting

She didn't really know how it was possible to move in the Void when there was no ground to push against; just kicking her feet a little did the trick, but she wondered where the sparkles came from.

36. molasses

She was shocked to see a whole shelf of treacle at the store and asked Bartz to buy a jar just because they could; in Bal it had been a rarity and a treat for festivals.

37. bee

She liked bees even more than she had before upon discovering that they swarmed monsters quite readily when she put on a green dress and feathered hat.

38. always

Always, he had said, and as she looked out over the valley she smiled to herself; she was pretty sure the little crossbreeze that kept fluttering hair into her eyes and mouth was his fault.

39. out back

Bal had been in a forested valley surrounded by marshes--now it was surrounded by grassland, like Grandpa said it had been before Exdeath's first rise.

40. sushi

Faris had grinned as she'd told the group that raw fish was a pirate delicacy--Krile put forward the opinion that Faris was just being too lazy to actually cook, but she had to admit the stuff was tasty.

41. box

It was a big crate, and just the right size for a five-year-old princess who needed practice managing a castle... never mind the name of Surgate's blacksmith burned into the side.

42. glove

She crossed out "gloves" in her letter to Bartz and wrote in "mittens" above it; knitting was a lot harder than it looked.

43. writing

It seemed so strange to write down all the things that had happened... how could she reduce it all to ink on a page?

44. heroic

She leaned her head against Bartz's back, holding onto him, held onto by Lenna as the wind drake soared through the black and stars towards the light of the world... the world you saved, Grandpa had said, but right now she didn't care who had done it so long as they got back there.

45. legitimately

Krile really didn't feel like it was okay for them to sneak through the hidden door to rifle through the shop's storeroom, but she could believe it when Lenna assured her that Grandpa had never had a problem with it.

46. release

She uncorked the gourd at her belt and could only stare in astonishment as the blue dragon burst out, raining icy death on the monsters before vanishing.

47. button

Bal's soldiers had a habit of giving her buttons for her birthday, but it wasn't until she was thirteen that she overheard someone explain to a trainee that the phrase cute as a was why.

When the four of them tramped through the woods, sloshed through flooded caverns, or trudged upstairs through ancient shrines, she stayed between Bartz and Lenna--it was comfortable there.

49. sorrow

Her mother and father, her soldier friends, and now Grandpa... it was too much, they had all died, and there would be nobody left except her, all alone; that was all she could think until she heard his voice somewhere near.

50. march

The hat like an upside-down boat, the long cyan coat with the epaulettes, the tall boots; something about being a Cannoneer just made Krile want to snap off silly salutes to Bartz, yesSAH!, so she did just that.
