Do the dead dream?
Will's memory palace no longer looks like the Jacobi house. Sometime long ago it became an empty hallway with no visible source of light and cells opening off the sides -- some barred, some glassed in, some with steel garage doors.

But now the light that falls on floor and ceiling and wall and door and Will is patterned with shifting rainbows.

When he notices the rainbows falling on his clothes, he lifts his head slightly and starts tracing them with one finger.

It's always been there; it wasn't there the last time he looked, or the time before that, or the time before that.
It's a wrought-iron gate set in a stone doorway, aclimb with leafy vines; here and there, shining through the foliage, peeks a ray of rainbow sunlight.
He knows what's on the other side. Or doesn't. Or both.

After a moment, he gets to his feet and approaches the gate, running a hand along the stone, then the plants.
