From THR's Borys Kit: Zac Efron is reteaming with his Neighbors cohort Seth Rogen for The Disaster Artist, New Line’s making-of movie about the 2003 drama The Room, widely considered one of the worst movies of all time

Yay! I wanted him to have a cameo in that movie and got it. I even looked at script pages a while ago to see if there is anything suitable.
Now, I didn't want him to have any significant part (because honestly, I'm not sure how this movie will do at the bo and he has enough comedies already) but a cameo is zero risk and I think this could potentially become a cult movie. Also, the premise while not super commercial is sort of interesting, the book it's based on is supposedly pretty good and the screenwriters who adapted it are good too.
I like that it's another movie on his IMDb, hopefully something funny for him to do, another indicator that he's accepted in the Rogen & co crew, 1 or 2 days of work which doesn't impact any of his other projects... I really don't see any downsides but only potential upsides.
Yes. A cameo is a good move (provided, of course, that he performs it well). Zac gets noticed for his acting and all the other parameters of his history and image get ignored. Recall all the good press he got for his cameo in that Josh Radner movie he shot in Ohio several years ago.
"...another indicator that he's accepted in the Rogen & co crew"
Accepted isn't the right word. They love him, as hinted in many of the interview comments beginning with Neighbors I and all the teasing to which they subject him. And who can blame them?
Zac is smart enough to go along with this hazing. I think he admires Rogen and what the hell, the match-up got him his biggest box-office success.
Thanks for adding that scene. I haven't seen the movie (yet) but it really looks as lulz as its reputation.
[Spoiler (click to open)]If they stick to the version of the script pages I have, the filming of this scene should be included in a condensed, shortened version. I can't wait to see that.
I'm really surprised how thrilled everyone how knows The Room and is looking forward to The Disaster Artist is about Zac's casting. A nice surprise I should say.
The book is awesome and the project could be promising if it wasn’t James Franco ego and involvement, by the news seems like James Franco isn't doing this by what is right for the project, seems like he’s doing it to give his friends a opportunity to reunite and have some fun, and yeah, all his last movies are like this actually, and all of them are criticized by this, it's like a festival of miscast
It's weird because I think Zac Efron would be nice as Greg Sestero, while Chris-R could be made by someone as Channing Tatum, Tommy Wiseau is the hardest role and could be played by someone as Joaquin Phoenix, James Franco I think that would be my last choice
Some scenes like Tommy deciding to be a underwear model just because Greg is will be nonsense because James Franco isn’t that ugly while Dave isn’t THAT good looking, the have pretty much the same face, and they’re already looking like they’re just cosplaying the characters
I think Zac shouldn't be a problem because it's just such a small role and as long as he captures Dan's over the top performance, he should be fine. But just based on watching the clip above, I agree that Channing would have probably made a good Chris-R too.
I assume you've seen the pic of James & Dave in character already. To me they look close enough but I have no idea if they fit performance-wise, so I'll take your word for it. I can understand the concern about casting James & friends (and the general weariness about James directing and producing); I guess based on the little I know, turning it into a bit broader comedy might have been the only viable option commercially (and even then I'm pretty skeptical about its prospect as I hinted at in my earlier comment). This movie might have been better off as an indie but who knows if they would have gotten financing then at all

Too bad they couldn't get Jennifer Lawrence to play the girl. The original actress looks like her.
