Long-time Linklater friend and collaborator Ethan Hawke was interviewed recently by New York magazine and in it he discusses briefly Linklater, Me and Orson Welles and Zac. Here is what he had to say:
and really, it's too bad MAOW had to come out the same year as inglourious basterds, because if not for christoph waltz cleaning up every damn supporting award (deservedly so), it'd be christian's year for sure.
srsly lol at bob. that's our new codeword for rpattz.
i just really hope he gets an oscar nomination. i mean, they haven't been able to do much campaigning really but the articles are awesome and hopefully that's enough for a nom.
ugh i just hope people who are too lazy to watch their screeners are at least proactive enough to google the critics associations/baftas/etc and see what's up.
i think people also wrongly hold it up as the only accurate measure of his talent because it was ~*~srs bsns~*~ but that isn't true either... i think 17 again gave him way more character to work with. but he seems to know that each performance counts, even the mainstream ones, so it's all good.
aww, the last bit of Ethan's blurb made me a little melancholy. it's completely accurate of the business but i hate to think that zac will really get stuck in it. i so badly want people to see how seriously he takes what he does.
Mte. But, (and I'm being totally cheesy right now, I fully acknowledge that) it made me think of something Conan said during his final Tonight Show that if you work really hard and you're kind, amazing things will happen.
I'd hope that if Zac ever did leave acting (of his own choice or otherwise) that he just continue to bring his kind heart, good intentions, and work ethic to whatever it is that he set his sights on.
In light of what Ethan says, it makes sense that Zac is keen to produce his own films (or at least, executively produce). It's like a massive finger at those people who didn't take him seriously. I'm proud of him. And really want his upcoming films to do well. :)
