I agree and enjoyed it as well. Nicholas Cage - two thumbs up and trust me, after seeing many of his last roles, I never thought I'd say that again about him. My only complaint is that they allowed the trailer to be edited as if this were a film for kids, when clearly it is far too adult and violent for many children.
In my adult life, I have rarely gone to the movies. I have the patience to wait until they come out in some form I can watch at home. The rare exception is movies like Jurassic Park, in which I really wanted the full effect of "big" dinosaurs. (That was probably close to the last time I went to the movies, so it tells you how serious I am about not going.)
As for critics, I can pretty much guarantee that if they hate it, I'll enjoy it. So the critics do work for me, just not in the way they think.
I have yet to see the movie. However, I think you would make a fantastic film maker. You have a certain vision, that I believe, would translate well to film. You shoot what you want to see. Never make anything for critics' sake. I'm not sure where the concept of getting some asshole to tell us what they think about a movie, so we could then decide on seeing it came from but it's bullshit. Same with music.
Anywho, I think with your extensive background in listening to soundtracks, that you could really move a scene. It takes a little time to make greatness but I think you have a lot of the movie making magic in you to start immediately. And with the kids...you have a full cast and crew!!!
