Free boxes are best, but Office Depot, and probably the others as well, have a "bulk" pack of flat boxes. I believe they are cheaper than U-Haul. Also, check Craigslist or Freecycle for boxes.
you can also ask the mailroom at work for those boxes that paper comes in. those are sturdy and have lids and therefore no need for tape :) the mail guys are really nice down there. i was friends with a buncha them way back when and used to get boxes all the time from them for my own moves and stuff...
you can check the storage facility places too and see how much their boxes are for bulk too.
samsclub has them too in bulk but i know you don't own there...
oh and painting you can definitely do yourself. theres two of you hehe
i did the bathroom all by myself - from scraping old paint (you dont need to do that tho) to priming and painting. it was tedious and definitely worked muscles i didnt know i had! but it was doable. so with two of you doing the work, it would be fine.
and yeah, you dont need someone to do furniture. pick out what you like at prices you like and voila! lol
http://www.homedecorators.com/ is a good place too. quality stuff at decent prices - not cheap cheap but decent for the quality you get. and nice stuff in all sorts of different themes/types - from asian to victorian... and everything from rugs to couches to any kind of table... cheaper than pottery barn/crate and barrel type stores but i think pretty same quality and more styles.

Whole Foods said to stop by at opening (8:00 a.m.) and I can take as many boxes as I like. I'll try that Saturday morning.
