Now I know

I had wondered why, with all the deer and woods, nicely landscaped yards and birdfeeders, that we do not have more rabbits and squirrels then we do. Turns out those dogs I hear now and again aren't dogs -they're coyote.

Glad I don't have kitties to worry about.. just gotta keep tabs on the little man.

reminds me of the little kid in "The Gods Must Be Crazy II" who remembered his father's warning that he needed to be a certain height to ward off the attack of hyenas

heh... I bet it works about the same way with coyotes. I can remember being at my uncle's ranch and being warned not to go out cause I wasn't 'big enough to scare a coyote'.

Yeah. Teach Little Man to walk softly and carry a big stick.

I read about an encounter between a very big grizzly and a fisherman out in Alaska. The guy was walking back to camp and crested a hill to come face to face with Bear coming down for dinner. The guy stopped still, his fishing pole held at his side. The bear looked him up and down, looked him up and down, taking in the height of the pole... then shuffled around him and went on his way... encounter of the scary kind, with a good ending.

Most of the time, for the animal, trouble isn't worth the effort. We just need to keep it that way.

I haven't seen any in the yard (yet) but I will keep my eyes open and the camera close.
