Autumn burns around him, a flash turning to stark white. It's been months since he spread his wings, let himself fly and feel Heaven's comforting wind. But this place isn't home for Castiel anymore. He can't place his finger on it, the way it's all just so wrong.
"You've gone soft, Castiel," they say. Their voices are loud and booming as if they're talking through a loud speaker just made for the God's.
It's a warning. Castiel has a choice, or so they say. To break ranks would be to greet the warmth of hell, and the thought alone causes a burn to run along the bone of his delicate wings.
When he's back on Earth, days later, there's the most human black circles beneath his cold eyes. Months ago Earth was just an assignment, a mission from God. But now, standing in the shadows where Dean can't see him, this place called Earth is worse than any punishment Hell could possibly provide.
"Dean," Castiel speaks into the quiet night.
"Cas." Dean's voice holds anger, pent up in between simple letters.
The air shifts between them, and Castiel's standing so close he can see the water thick and holding over Dean's beautiful soulful eyes. Without thinking he brings his hand up, presses it to Dean's cold cheek.
"I'm sorry," he whispers, his voice breaking and a distinct but unfamiliar pain clawing in his chest.
Dean stares at him, like he's looking into a life Castiel will never get the chance to live.
The barriers crashing down with each breath, and finally Castiel's cracked lips meet Dean's softer ones. The kiss is soft and forgiving. Castiel wants to tell Dean how much like innocence he tastes, but somehow he knows that those words just won't do. So slowly, with a crashing feeling of... love flowing through his veins, he rests his forehead against Dean's and stares back into a life Dean will get to live.
If it costs him his wings, a burnt body suffering in Hell, Castiel will do it. He'd do anything for Dean.
