Of Pineapples

It was not that Will was empty hungry. He had felt that before, in childhood, and he knew the ache of it. He knew the way that the gnaw turned to pain, and then to cold, and huddled stillness. He knew the way that the bodies outrage turned to patient misery.

Oh, I love it! What a sweet little story, to come out of that reticule post!

I've bookmarked the pattern. I don't think I'm a skilled enough knitter yet, but someday I'd like to make it.

I think maybe ins retrospect, that the reticule may have been too upscale for a vegetable vendor in a nameless port town, but who knows? Maybe she made such lovely things in her off time... I do know that she thought that inarticulate hungry Will Bush was very sweet. She was happy to sell it to him.

Just going by the things that the Wilder girls made for themselves in Farmer Boy... it seems plausible enough to me. Besides, it's such a cute "inspired by" story!

I want to hug Bush, particularly with my appreciation sharpened by several weeks of McGann Mondays on Tumblr. I intend to start writing him soon. Is the name Sally for one of his sisters canon? I lack the patience with the later books to find out. Horatio as Eeyore holds little charm for me.

Ha! Yes Horatio is an Eyore. But I sort of love him for it anyway.

No, Sally is not canon. The book just says he has 4 sisters. I wrote a Bush story, a while back, and gave him sisters with names.

You should name his sisters whatever you want. I have a hard time with 18th century names anyway. They seem to swing wildly between very plain and very crazy, with nothing in the middle. all the names I have used in my stories are verified to the times. Most of them are fairly plain. Except for Saphronia Cathcart. (Cleveland's girlfriend.)
