Poor William. The little detail about the better knot, both the nauticalness and the caring, the wishing he could have a woman of his own ...

And Polly seems so real too, playing a part but genuinely kind, and a little sad.

I think Polly was relieved to have someone young and clean, and decently kind. Obviously she has little choice who comes down the hall. She is a bit apprehensive.

William thinks of women as real people. He might visit a brothel, but he would not be rude.
