Question for brands/seamstresses/designers

Hi everyone! Recently I’ve been looking more into how Lolita dresses are made, and I had no idea that some brands had designers separate from the seamstresses! I’m working on my first design today and I was wondering..

Can I partner with a seamstress to become a brand? In theory of course, I’d need to work more on designing more dresses, blouses, ( Read more... )

I'm not an indie designer, but in theory, yes. Two of my friends have a similar partnership where one does print artwork and the other sews the garments and they release them as collaborative work between the two brands.

One thing to keep in mind is that working with fabric vs sketching is pretty different and there may be things that work on paper that don't translate well into fabric.

You also can commission a seamstress to make a pattern and a sample for manufacturing, and then go to a sewing house to have the garment made, however, you will need to be able to pay for the minimum number of garments up front.
