Problems I've had picking my first dress

Hey everyone. I have been interested in Lolita fashion for many years, but have just recently tried to actually purchase my first dress. However, the dress I found didn't fit me in the bust... at all. I do want to find a gorgeous dress that I can wear to the meets in my town! I have a 38" bust and 30" waist. Does anyone know of a brand or any ( Read more... )

Hello, i can't help more than the previous user but i would like to suggest that you post your purchased dress as well as talk a bit about the style and look you are hoping for. I am around your size and i have a lot of things that i can fit into but there's also a lot that i won't so it really will depend on what you are looking for. <3

I have similar measurements as well and I have to warn you that depending on what your height is... It'll be quite difficult to find OPs that fit properly. I don't think you'll have any trouble purchasing skirts with your waist, and JSKs are not too difficult either. I've found that even OPs with shirring and forgiving measurements may not fit right, because the waist rides up higher than it was designed for on people with larger bust sizes.

As amytasukada said, look at the garment measurements of the individual pieces to judge whether or not they'll fit. A lot of taobao companies also offer the option of making a custom-sized piece according to your measurements.

I'll also write down a few tips that I hope can help:
1. Shirring is your friend. Dresses with shirred backs are very forgiving and comfortable.
2. Be sure to consider the back and shoulders of OPs and JSKs. For example, [this kind of dress]

full-back shirring AP jsks would fit you and be reasonably flattering if you don't insist on getting an OP. OPs will harder with those measurements, AP's "mini-sleeves" OPs will fit. Full shirring AP OPs will fit for sure but you might find it isn't flattering over the bust (kind of ... lumpy).

I'm actually pretty short (5'3") so I'm not sure if my height works for me or against me in my quest. I didn't specify a particular Sub- fashion because I'm very open and like to wear many different things. Although I will admit I love gothic and traditional Lolita styles the most. I'm a big fan of Moi Meme Moitie, Alice and the Pirates, and Angelic Pretty. I've seen some Angelic Pretty dresses that seem as though they might fit, being 103 cm at the bust. I also didn't specify a price range because price isn't an issue for the right dress. I can save up $400 or more if I need to.

That's actually to your advantage! :D I'd imagine that with your height you won't have too much difficulty fitting into dresses as long as the official measurements are actually ones you can fit into.

hey! great questions ^__^
I'm also pretty new to the fashion--bought my first dress in September.

the best brand stuff for busty ladies I've found are BTSSB dresses with full shirring, or at least back shirring.

I'm looking to buy my next wardrobe additions from Lady Sloth. It's a beautiful indie brand based in Poland and they do custom sizing *___*

they have awesome chiffon blouses too!

my other fav indie brands are Haenuli and Dear Celine; the former just started making sizes to accomodate bigger busts! you should be just fine with dresses that accomodate 98 or 100 cm busts, as long as they have a bit of give by way of lacing and shirring. better safe than sorry--always. (I've had to sell some beautiful dresses because of awkward fitting or just not fitting at all)

I'd say only try an OP if the max bust is at least 5 cm above your bust size. stay away from babydoll shapes as they tend to have short bodices, which will probably not fit over your bust. my first brand dress was the Antique Playing Cards OP from Innocent World. it fit ( ... )
