Do you happen to have any you particularly like? Or ones that are missing from the listmania list? As much as I tend to have mixed feelings about them, or just straight up disagree with what is written, I still really enjoy reading them!

which listmania list?
I really collect them, so it is not important how the quality is.
I think I like the Japan Fashion Now book most atm

I bought a copy of Japanese Goth on a whim and it's a great photo book! It has old school lolita, illustrations, and visual kei in it. You know it's old school when Misako is wearing a headdress and in shiro lolita! I read Japanese Schoolgirl Inferno somewhere (bookstore or library) and it a cute and short book (about the size of a flipped Tokyopop manga). I hope someone does a review of the Tokyo Adorned book and shares it on EGL! Also, Kawaii!: Japan's Culture of Cute looks like a well done book about recent jfashion.

I actually picked it up as I was making the list because it looked really interesting and was incredibly cheap used!

Patrick Macias (the author of Japanese Schoolgirl inferno) has done many articles and podcasts and he is very interesting to hear/read XD

I follow his blog, but it's largely just a tumblr-esque thing of neat pop culture and retro stuff, where does he normally post? I know a lot of people didn't like it, but I actually really enjoyed JSI and thought that, despite being obviously very tongue in cheek, it was very well researched, especially for what it was.

I'd also like to add: Japanese Fashion: A Cultural History by Toby Slade (a good historial perspective on fashion in Japan, but very text heavy!) and A New Era of Tokyo Fashion (interviews with Japanese designers including h.Naoto and Keisuke Kanda).
There's also lots more about other Japanese fashion (eg: Take Ivy, high-end designers like Comme des Garcons, etc).

I'm just about to start my MA in fashion next week, eep!

I saw both of those actually! I didn't add the first one because I am really only interested in books about street fashion and style tribes, rather than fashion in general or high fashion and I thought the second one was maybe too avant garde for street fashion?

They do both sound like interesting books though!

The second one might be more up your alley - I think this might be the only official Keisuke Kanda interview out there (he's pretty uh... eccentric!), and he has a bit of an overlap (in cute/kawaii terms) with some lolita fashion.

I'm sure one of my lecturers has a huge collection of old street snaps from Tokyo, so I'll ask to take a look through her archive - of course I'll report back if I find any proto-lolitas! :)

I don't own the book, but a Dutch news website here copypasted a few pictures and copied and translated some of the text next to it. About the lolita, they said "classic lolita", where ruffles, pink, and tutus galore'
..I have yet to see a classic lolita wear a pink tut, but okay. : P so while I like the pictures (and adore that 'classic lolita' who was actually kind of really sweet),I don't think the comments about the outfits are going to be very truthful.

Oh, which news site was it? I'm curious what they have to say, really.

Well, it was more of a photo series and the commentary wasn't much more than just a quick explanation about what it was about (and it's Dutch ofc : P)
I found it on wtf.nl.

Well, Dutch is my native language, haha. So that's not problem. I fear the article though, wtf.nl isn't always a great website to rely on.

Neojaponisme did an awesome and amazingly in-depth history of gyaru: http://neojaponisme.com/2012/02/28/the-history-of-the-gyaru-part-one/

I really wish they had written one on lolita, I would love to read such a detailed history of...well, any of the main street styles, really.
