Looking for local Lolis. Advice? Tips and tricks?

Sep 27, 2012 19:45

Hello there! I'm Niha and I'm from Mumbai (Bombay), India. I have been a lone loli for a while now and I was wondering if there were any other Indian lolis lurking around in the community. If not, I have tried including lolita in other aspects and parts of my life to help feeling less lonely, drowning in ruffles ( Read more... )

I don't know if you can really force someone to wear something they don't want to, but see if any of your friends might be interested in it, and then offer to dress them up for a day with things in your closet and see how they like it.

It's a good idea to introduce your love of the fashion to your friends. But just because a friend doesn't share the same enthusiasm for lolita as you do, does not mean that you can't be close. Fashion is such a trite thing to base a friendship off of.

I personally think making friends with a stranger(s) who dresses in lolita is weird and dangerous. Five or more years ago, I myself tried going to local meet ups in my area, but the only thing bonding these women was an obsession of a Japanese fashion. Nothing else. Not to mention that it always had the awkwardness of a clique, and there were some odd dramatic moments involving the resident "popular" girl. I'm glad I've put all that behind me.

I basically learned that just because someone likes the same brands as you, or dresses in a similar style, does not mean that you have anything else in common. It's similar to going to a concert to see your favorite band, and encountering a rude, obnoxious crowd member. Sure they like the same music, but in all other respects, they are a

It can be scary, I am aware and I certainly agree with you. I have re-run this thought in my head several times.

I have a friend who likes lolita a lot. But she isn't able to afford it, not even Bodyline. It's difficult to have to explain budget to a financially unstable person while you're actually in stealth asking them of a favor that can benefit the both parties involved but benefits you more than the other.

It's also sad that we share liking for the same brands and I have some hanging in my closet. It feels strange and I cannot describe it well in words but it seems almost wrong and unkind.

Am I mistaken?

It would be wonderful to see a Lolita outfit made from sari (?) fabric with accessories that are
traditional Indian wear. But I do agree with the others. Dress up friends in Lolita, if they will
go along with you. You needn't go out. Have a tea party at home! It could be fun. :)

Haha but goes against the rules of Lolita. The fabric used for Sarees are either extremely flimsy or very thich and embellished and/or embroidered. I've thought of designing something of that sort but it only turns out to be a nightmare waiting to happen. Sarees are too bejeweled to be used for something like lolita...

It's like you cannot use fabrics and concepts of the western gothic subculture and call it lolita. It doesn't fit... :/

But still, I dare to dream. I think I'm very brave to do that! XD

You don't have to make an entire dress out of one type of fabric. What you could do is use a plain base fabric, and then add accents of saree fabric here and there. Of course you will have to experiment with how much of the embellished saree fabric you will use to make it look balanced. Don't give up! :D

And regarding incorporating elements of western goth into lolita, yes, it can be done. Corsets, piercings, crosses, and chunky platform shoes have traditionally been associated with western goth, but have been incorporated into lolita just fine. In fact a lot of lolita fashion has been influenced by western goth (they've been around long before we have, after all :P). I've also seen some girls pull off cyberlox with sweet lolita quite well, it just depends on how you do it, and how many elements you throw in so as to keep it from looking too busy. :)

I agree, maybe one day I'll have an idea that can eventually work well with Indian fabrics and prints. Thank you for the encouragement ( ... )
