Turning a OP into a corset skirt

Aug 19, 2011 13:33

So, basically, I have AatP's Sleeping Beauty OP in ivory, and I'm not too keen on the sleeve situation. However, I don't want to sell the dress because I love the print so much. I was thinking about making it into a corset skirt...

I think no matter how perfect your sewing is value will go down. I personally have no problems with "cutting up" my brand pieces cos if I want to sell them I just keep in mind that they aren't worth as much as they used too.
If you think you will wear the skirt a lot go for it. If you are only planning on wearing it every now and then I would sell the o.p and try to buy the skirt eventhough I know it's hard to get.

Lol. Yeah. The problem is that I really love the print, but I don't like the style of the original skirt or JSK, so I figured I would turn the OP I have into a corset skirt. I know I would wear it a lot, but it's hard to think that I'll be wearing Lolita forever, and the dress cost a lot of money (bought directly from AatP when it was released). XP

I think it's a great idea, but yes, I do think the value would go down. If nothing else, I think it would go down simply on the basis of skirts being significantly less valuable/sought after than OPs in most cases.

I was thinking this, but at the same time, corset skirts seem to be much more popular than the style of this OP.

Oh yeah, it will go down. It isnt really that dress anymore, it is half the dress. I think if you 'proved' your skill in sewing though, and could assure that what you did was great quality, it wouldnt be that bad, and you may get people who wanted that kind of skirt for the print as well.

Do remember that corset skirts have plastic boning in it for shape, and if I was going to buy from you, I would be paying attention to how the boning was put in and if it is poking out.

I'll definitely take the boning into consideration if I decide to alter it. I'm kind of anal when it comes to my sewing. ^_^

Oh, and also, the OP has boning in the stomach area already. This was mainly the inspiration for making it into a corset skirt, because it almost has the corset in it already.

Thats good, it will make it much easier to alter and turn out well.

I have to admit my first thought was "Noooo don't cut it up!!", but then, I like the style of the OP xD. But if you don't like it as an OP, better to cut it up than just let it hang around in the closet.
And think of it this way - you'll have the one and only corset skirt with that print ^w^.

That's kind of what I was thinking too! People would be like, "I didn't think they made a corset skirt in that print..." and I'd be like, "Nope, I did!" lol.

I think you'd be better off selling or partially trading the op for the skirt and building the corset skirt up from there.

The thing is that the OP already has boning in the bodice, so I'd really only have to take off the chiffon top and it would practically be done. Whereas with the skirt I'd have to find a fabric that matched the ivory and fabric type, which is super hard. >_

No doubts that it'd be easier that way, but I was mostly addressing your concern for losing resale value. The OP is the rarest of the styles of this print. I tried searching egl_comm_sales and the only time I could find it sold was in black for $500. If you turn it into a skirt, I don't you'd get nearly that much. If you start with the skirt, I feel like you're more likely to retain most of the resale value.

Oh, I see what you mean now. That's also a good point. I've seen the ivory one for auction before, but they are definitely rare on the comm_sales. I'll take that into consideration.
