Sophie Lancaster was a goth who was murdered walking home through a park in England in 2007, simply for how she looked. She was an intelligent and kind girl with a bright future ahead of her who died trying to protect her boyfriend as the gang repeatedly kicked and jumped on her head. When the police arrived they couldn't identify if she was male or female because of the extent of her injuries. Today would have been her 23rd Birthday.
Worse than the horrific event itself were the reactions of the perpetrators and their family claiming "There's two moshers nearly dead up Bacup park - you wanna see them - they're a right mess." More worrying still one of the killers 'was "laughing and joking" with his mother as police quizzed him.' and that 'Harris’s [one of the killers] mother was laughing all through the proceedings of this murder case.'
The Sophie Lancaster foundation has been set up in her memory to help Stamp Out Prejudice, Hatred & Intolerance Everywhere. They aim to educate people and try to eradicate prejudice over people's looks and appearance. We're not goths, we don't look the same and more often (in my experience) receive mostly positive comments; however I know some people that do not like travelling home alone when they're dressed up and many of us who can at least identify with being physically or verbally abused because of their appearance.
If you want to support the foundation please watch the video,
visit the website,
make a £1 donation,
or buy some makeup or
