Suckerpunch

Against my better instincts, I went to see Suckerpunch. It is without a doubt the most awful film I have ever seen.

Warning: Lots of really gross rape-y stuff )

The first review I read of it went on about how it's a radical feminism movie. Just on reputation I was like: :O ... :/

Yeah, I read something like that and was dubious. Now I kind of wonder what the hell they think radical feminism is...

I believe it has something to do with the Spice Girls.

As someone who is completely oblivious to 90% of popular culture unless it's Famous On The Internets, I have to ask - Is this some kind of trend in movies and television? Like are they normally all about sex? :0 I am trying to understand why someone would even think this is a good idea for a film.

They're not normally this bad, no, but Snyder's previous films haven't been beacons of taste and cultural value either.

Don't 300 and Watchmen both have women "consenting" to rape for some "empowering" reason?

I haven't seen the Owls of Ga'Hoole, but I'm a bit afraid to now.

300 definitely does; I don't think Watchmen has a rape scene but it has a reeeaaaally porny sex scene and Rorschach's whole backstory is built on the kidnapping and rape of a small girl.

Based on the trend from them to Suckerpunch, I would expect Owls of Ga'Hoole to be about 65% rape.

I'm reminded of a Something Positive strip:

"Cap'n Hoot-Hoot says a better title for your play is Rape-Rape -- A Tale of Rapening. Also, your next play should have a little less rape in it."

That pretty much sums it up.
