I'm glad you didn't jump right into the chicken thing. I think your new thoughts today make much more sense.

Is that the book I started to write in and never finished? I got some nice pictures from that day.

Garlic mustard. That's sounds interesting. Do you cook with it or put it in salads?

Yes - that's the same book you wrote in.

It smells like garlic if you crush it and it is in the mustard family of flowers. Wikipedia says this about it: The chopped leaves are used for flavoring in salads and sauces such as pesto, and sometimes the flowers and fruit are included as well. These are best when young, and provide a mild flavour of both garlic and mustard. The seeds are sometimes used to season food directly in France. I've never eaten it though.

Chickens give more than just good eggs. But you're smart to consider the responsibilities. Have you owned them before? They don't often peck each other unless cooped up in small tight quarters.

I adore your goat shed.

I have had them before and am looking forward to having them again someday - but I'm feeling now might not be right. I'm going to give it a few more weeks before I decide at least. That's true - if they are healthy and in spacious quarters they won't peck but it was just seeing the little sick one that made me think how I would feel to face death again and I don't want to do that right now.

The goat shed is my spiritual home :)

Re: the chickens: I have found chook tractors a lot of work. You have to move them and you always have to make sure they have access to shade in the hot weather. They also like to be able to sun bathe. If they are in the same place all the time, they wear the ground out, and you wouldn't like a muddy/dusty place beside your art space. Getting them from Deb sounds good. You can see the chooks if ever you need a good dose of 'chook' and you can get good free range eggs that are tasty and healthy. Yes, probably a Tensing replacement. More utilitarian, I guess. Will you ever get another dog? You still have two cats, don't you? And now a lizard has come into your life. And maybe a snake will!

Yes, we still have 2 cats and I don't want another dog - at least for a very long time. I miss Tenzing - I don't miss a dog.

I have wanted chickens for a long time but it still doesn't seem like the right time yet. Someday - maybe when we really get back to the country again. This seems like "country" here to someone who is from town but I want to be even farther out. Thanks for the input about the chicken tractors - I will definitely remember that!

Helping Sebby with his lizard and all the special stuff she needs is already expensive!

HI
I just wanted to address the pecking order issue. One cause is overcrowding. My hens dont do too much of that except to move someone out of "her" spot on the roost. even then it is minor.
Not trying to influence you!
Interesting about the garlic mustard. I have a lot of it here. didnt know you could eat it!

Yeah - I'm not that worried about pecking per se. But it just turned me off for the moment when I saw the other chicks at the feed store pecking at their weakened sister when she was down.

I'm pretty sure SOMEday I'll get chickens - just putting if off for a while again. For now I'll just enjoy your wonderful eggs.

I never knew you could eat garlic mustard either - I might give it a taste. It is an invasive plant.
