My mother used to say, "at the crack of ten," to be funny. I guess I've never wondered what the crack of dawn is, precisely. I think I assumed it was like a starter pistol, or the crack of whip, to mark the start of the day, but that's not very dawnlike, is it? Or does it mean the tiny crack that lets the light in at the horizon, like the opening of a door? Must ponder.
