Last evening Dave and I took the dogs to Rainbow Rocks. It's a place on a gamelands out past Cranberry. They should make it into a county park or something. It's so unique with huge rocks sticking up out of the ground. Pictures:( Read more... )

That Rainbow Rocks area is pretty awesome! Is it in the Venango County area? I googled and there is a Rainbow Rocks petroglyph site. I don't know if it's the same area. If it is it would be cool to view the petroglyph.

I agree a darker background does make the colors pop.

Yes, that's the one. I didn't look at the petroglyphs last night but they are under that outcropping that Dave is standing under in some of the pictures. I've taken pictures of them before. Maybe I'll find those pictures later.

Still learning!

My vote....black background. But I'm glad you tried the natural background, too. It's good to compare or else you'll never know.

The rocks are A mazing! Great pictures!

Yeah, I think I might try my next with dark colors and see if that will work.

They are really wonderful and not many people even know about it.

They are! And the biggest (just sitting on the surface of the ground) that I'm aware of close to us.

Were there glaciers there?

I don't know for sure. We're on the border of glaciation and non glaciation. More likely unglaciated. We are in the Allegheny Plateau here and I think most of what shapes the terrain is erosion.

Yes! At least they are on a game lands so it's a public place and anyone can visit there.

That spot would be a lovely park. I can see why you enjoy it. That rock isn’t as dramatic as those with the darker background, but I like how you have worked in lines that fit with the shape of the rock.

I can imagine Rainbow Rocks with a mowed lawn and park benches. Though maybe in some ways that would ruin it. But it would make it more accessible to some people - those in wheelchairs or with baby strollers and such.

I did a bit more painting on the rock last night and added dark accents in the bland areas - that improved it.
