I always wonder what might change if residents - but not citizens - could vote. There are something like 20 million green card holders in the US and 15 million undocumented migrants. Plus however many temporary work visa holders and the group of people with felony convictions who did their time but still can't vote, that's a huge number of people who live and work and pay taxes in the US but don't have any political representation.
Sadly, i suspect that even if all those people could vote, the final breakdown would still be fairly similar, since America is stuck in a two party system where both parties are pretty conservative by international standards. It's not like people with other ideas really have much of a chance to vote for a representative who shares those ideas anyway.
Yeah, i guess it's an issue close to home for me, because i have spent far more years of my life living in countries where i am not a citizen than countries where i am a citizen. As a result, i have only been eligible to vote as a local resident once in my entire life - when i lived in Berlin and they allowed foreigners to vote in local council elections (although not regional or national). I have voted while traveling in a different province in the last Canadian federal election, but even still that's only two votes in over 20 years of adulthood. I understand that the right to vote is considered a privilege/advantage of becoming a citizen (as opposed to a permanent resident), but it still seems a little unfair that people can live and work in a place for years without ever having the chance to vote.
In my mind's eye, you were taller. It's funny how we imagine how people look if we have never seen them. In this case your height. I've lost 1/2" so now I'm 5'7".
I hope you are able to find something to do that brings you joy today! Whether it's just reading or going for a short walk or accomplishing one small task, I hope it feels good.
