tarot collecting

Whenever I get a new tarot deck I like to put the deck into a bag, or pouch so it is easier to get them out. I hate how some of the decks fit so tightly into the little boxes they give you and then the boxes tear when you take them in and out. I feel like I am honoring the decks more when I put them into a cloth covering. But it had gotten to the ( Read more... )

Wow. You have a lot of tarot decks! 😀 Which is your favorite and why?

If I could only have one deck I would have the Rider-Waite version illustrated by Pamela Colman Smith. It seems to be the most expressive and I can see why it is so popular. But I love seeing other versions - like old friends dressed in new clothes. The decks I like the least are ones where they illustrate the number cards with just pictures of the objects - like seven swords crossed or 5 cups stacked up - boring. Right now my favorites are my newest - the Light Seer's Tarot, the Muse Tarot and the Crow Tarot - and they are really good for getting drawing ideas. I like to pull a card each morning and use it as inspiration for a little drawing - just to illustrate a thought.

Though, the most beautiful deck I have, in my opinion, is the Golden Tarot:

Oh this is a nice picture! I don't really know much about tarot, but seeing this picture reminded me of my mom. I think she had this exact deck, though it's hard to be sure. I definitely remember the golden borders.

Could be she did have it. It's a well known deck. I really like these images a lot.

I didn't know you were a Tarot person! Most of the decks I see there are ones I am not familiar with. I have a lot of my deck collection in their boxes, inside a purple velvet box. But the collection out grew that... so I have some in their original boxes, some in bags, and some in their original boxes with *those* inside bags. Some of the bags are organdy, so I can see what the decks are without pulling them out- you're right, it's a total pain when you don't know what's inside! Especially when you have a couple of cats that like to pick up stuff like those little bags and walk around with them, and so you're looking in the bags you have left, trying to find a particular one... not realizing it is under the bed somewhere.

If you can I would love to see a photo of your collection. Or a picture of your purple velvet box with them in it. Just like I was asked by Malloy's Camera - which is your favorite?

At the moment, I cannot do a photo because I lost my camera cable, and, for whatever reason, my phone won't talk to my computer. The computer *sees* the phone, but can't extract files from it.

I have a couple I love, like the Goddess Tarot, and the cat one I have- I cannot remember its name! but when all is said and done, I feel most at home with my ancient mini Rhyder-Waite. I bought it when I was 12 or 13 (I'm 65 now) and managed to hang onto it all these years when most other things have been lost. It's the one I find easiest to read, in part because I've just used it for so long, and in part because the symbols are so up front. Some decks are lovely, but I look at the card and think "what the heck is *that* saying?!?!" There are times I get frustrated with the Goddess deck because of that- if you're not acquainted with that goddess, you're lost. So I have the big companion book.

I agree about the Rider-Waite. It illustrates everything the best, to me. I have a mini Rider-Waite in a tin box that I love if I want to travel with a deck. I hadn't been familiar with the Goddess deck. Now that I see some images from it I see the art is beautiful!

A very special and sacred space you have there on those two shelves. I like them out of the pouches, too.

I feel like I missed a good picture though. I should have taken a before picture with them all laid out in their colorful cloth wrappings. Each little brick with a different color pattern and texture.

I see a number of old favorites in your collection; think I've got more than you which is why I want to sell some, but it feels like a lot of work.

It does seem like work to sell things! I actually thought maybe I'd just donate the ones I am not in love with to the Goodwill.

Ha! You do have a collection! I see some that I have too. The Golden Tarot of Klimt is a beautiful one. You have the Golden Tarot too. I love that one.
