Catalpa tree. Very tropical looking, but it grows way up here!

Thanks for the ID. I remember now (after looking up catalpa) that she called it a bean tree, a common name for it too.

Ah, I did not know that name! But it's very fitting- in fall it has these bean pods that are at least a foot long.

They are - I've seen the beans hanging down on this kind of tree but I don't think I ever noticed the flowers before. Very intricate.
