I am so very sorry. It is heart-breaking to lose a pet, and we always question whether it was the right thing to do. My girl (a greyhound) I am pretty sure was mistreated. She is my 4th greyhound and the only one who I think was mistreated. (it is not to a trainer's advantage to mistreat their dogs, but like anywhere, there are bad trainers, too) She is still leery of strangers after 2.5 years. She is definitely a happy girl when it is just me around. Hopefully they will soon be ready to give another dog a forever home.
I’m so sorry to hear about Jackson. My Buster was a lot like that (right down to the tumour on the spine). It sounds like a gentle and loving way to go, and he certainly deserved that. Chloe and Mike must have been wonderful dog parents to have gotten him over that distrust and the biting that might have been enough for many shelters to euthanize rather than trying to get him adopted.
Sorry to read about Jackson. Having had these end-of-life experiences, with a number of pets over the years, I kind of know how it feels. But of course, having said that, we never really know how it feels. Anyway, my sympathy to Chloe and Mike and the rest of the family.
Hope the rest of the week gets brighter, in all of the ways that matter...

Tell your kids I'm sorry for their loss. It's never easy even when you know it's the right thing to do.
