Hooray that you had a productive day! What a special gift for your niece. Does it feel strange to have her fairly close to you in age? (I have the same phenomenon in my family. We don't find it strange at all! Lol :D)
I think keeping Andy is important, so your idea is a good one. So long as he can go to the toilet and gets regular exercise (which he does), it's good for him to be obedient at all times. It is vitally important that he comes and heels and stays when told to. I think teaching him tricks and fetching things for you and stuff are all exercise and get him using his intelligence. He probably feels happy when he pleases you.
And good on you for getting a solid two hours in at the basement! I would have had sore feet, too, after two hours of standing on cement.
I was 12 when my niece was born. In some ways we were growing up together!
I have heard that it is good to keep your puppy close while he is learning and a way to do that is just to keep him leashed to you. Seems to be working so far.
Yeah, my two youngest sisters are far closer in age to my two eldest daughters that they are to me! My youngest sister's daughter gets on just fine with my granddaughters. They're about the same age. And my niece and my granddaughter look alike - definitely from the same family!
I'm glad keeping Andy close by is working for you :)
