A Serious Unfortunate Event

Iza and I recently experienced a nasty little instance of South African crime. The good thing is that we are ok. (That outcome was not guaranteed.) The bad thing is that our valuables, including passports, are gone ( Read more... )

Oh no!

Edit:I'm not sure if this meets any of your needs, but if you're in Cape Town tomorrow, we have printer, scanner, someone who can pick you out of a line-up, and a lawyer who can certify copies.

Thank you! I think we are ok on all of those - fortunately I have a fairly well-equipped local family support structure. If we do need anything along those lines I will gratefully let you know.

I have copies of police paperwork, but to get them, I sat in a back office in Knysna police station on Friday helping a constable separately certify 54 pages. Tedious but effective.

Glad you are both ok. Hope to still see you sometime. There's a party happening on NYE in Kenilworth if you're interested.

Thank you! We did enjoy the rest of the trip though. It helped having several days chilling on Leisure Isle to dilute the unpleasant memories.

Poor you! :-( Very glad you are both OK though. Hope the rest of your holiday isn't overwhelmed with paperwork.

The paperwork did dominate several days that would have otherwise been spent seeing people we wanted to see. It wasn't the holiday we planned, but it was still a good holiday.

Gah, that's pretty horrible. At least you're ok - that's the important part. Good way to ruin the start of the holiday. :(

I did think of your habit of carrying a big knife when you were in SA. Doing so probably wouldn't have changed the good outcome we fortunately got, but it would have improved the chances of getting it (if that makes sense).

Also fortunately, it wasn't the beginning of the holiday that was disturbed. We'd had several lovely days in the Cederberg, and a beautiful drive via the Robertson Valley and Oudtshoorn, before the brief nastiness occurred.
