When has it gone too far?

Re: this thread regarding the continuing fall-out from gatorgrrrl's fic.

Specifically, a commenter stating that gatorgrrrl has received death threats, and then going on to ask people to take a step back.

1. First of all, that is not on. By no means do I condone death threats, and if there are people in fandom resorting to such tactics, I thoroughly disapprove. ( Read more... )

Lol you guys just want to keep talking about it to make yourselves look good. What more can you guys nitpick about that we haven't heard a billion times with links! And loaded jargon! I'm already yawning. Keep circle jerking though. None of us are threatening you, did an anon or someone send you something threatening? But somebody did send her a death threat. W/E. Yeah it's having the ripple effect of more people being hypocrites and picking and choosing what they get offended by like its ok to erase someone's sexual identity and gender identity but don't touch their religious identity! You guys are so far up your own asses.

Since you started off your comment by saying that the only reason people are still having intelligent discussion on race is because they want to make themselves look good, I really have nothing more to say to you.

Your ass privilege is showing, dear! It must be nice living in that ivory tower of yours where systemic bigotry never affects you in the least.

She does have a point though.
I think the girl who wrote the fic got the idea a while back and won't make such a mistake again. All the wanking that's going on now is completely unnecessary. People pretend like she's the devil.
Everyone can write about their feelings towards racism or their daily experiences (and they should if they want to!), but do they really still have to include her name or a link to her fic? I think it's possible to get a point across without bashing her like that. Some of the comments I've read were far worse than what she wrote.

I'd like to see all of them still being blamed for mistakes they made at some point in their lives.

Going anon, because I'm not interested in being dragged into a wank...

At this point, I could have written this entry without the slightest reference to the person in question, and people still would have known who I was talking about.

We're sitting at less than a week since this first started. It will die down, but the bigger the error, the longer the repercussions last.

True! But mentioning her name over and over again will draw even more people in. Even today I have met people who weren't aware of the discussion that is going on because they keep to a tiny corner of the fandom, so they wouldn't have found the girls' journal from a general comment.
Of course she is wrong and even though it wasn't her intention to offend anyone she did (and good intentions don't make this right), so I hope you can see that I generally agree with you.
I just don't like how so many people want to crucify her now and how everyone is adding fuel to the fire.

No, she doesn't actually have a point at all.

I don't think she got the idea at all, unless she has retracted her statement that she thinks she did a decent job of handling things "respectfully." But even if not, people have a right to discuss something as often as they want, ESPECIALLY when it is part and parcel of an ongoing part of their reality, as it just so happens that racism is for people of color.

She wrote a racist fic, which she defended and offered faux-apologies for, in the wake of people taking issue with it. I see plenty of reason to bash her.

That does fail rather badly. Should people suddenly stop disliking her fic just because other people are being stupid too? I don't think that's how it works.

I just talked about this in my own post, actually. People keep bringing up "abuse" and "threats", but I have been all over the internet in the interest of keeping my roundup up-to-date and have seen none of this ( ... )
